aurora visible in baltimore, oct. 10th ’24

big cme from oct. 8th has finally reached us on earth, and while i didn’t expect to see much from all the way down in maryland, we walked out into the park to have a check. we were able to see red (h-alpha emission) and green ([oiii] emission). phone cameras can’t beat those with tripods or more northern homes but we still managed to capture some of the structure in the aurora. my first time seeing it, im pretty sure.

aurora facing north, northeast in wyman park
aurora facing north, through the trees, with a bit of fiddling with the stretch to bring out the structure.
the lasco coronagraph captured this coronal mass ejection on oct. 8th that is responsible for the aurora. also shown is a comet that flew by the sun and broke up into little icy chunks after perihelion passage
